PLASENCIA ALMA DEL FUEGO CONCEPCIÓN (6.5"X 54)

If you want a good movie-like story behind a cigar, let me tell you that the "Alma del Fuego" has it all. Its story begins with the fact that most of the tobacco used for this blend comes from a legendary volcanic island that is seated in the middle of a lake in central America! That's bound to win an Oscar for sure, right? Insert the Jurassic Park intro theme here!

AS A CIGAR SOMMELIER it is our duty to understand the story of each work of art that we smoke and recommend it if it seems pertinent. The Alma del Fuego's story is beautiful. When you pan across the waters of Lake Nicaragua, two volcanoes can be seen rising magnificently from the shores of Ometepe Island. Ometepe is an island formed by two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua, its name derives from the Nahuatl words "ome" (two) and "tepetl" (mountain), meaning "two mountains". The Conception is the active volcano to the north, and the Maderas is the inactive volcano to the south. These volcanoes are the reason the soil of Ometepe is so dark and rich in nutrients, and why the island grows some of the best tobacco in the world.

The Plasencia family has long loved the leaf that comes from this island, and the Alma del Fuego is a tribute to Ometepe. To achieve the full potential of the volcanic soils, all the Ometepe tobaccos used for the double binder and half the filler blend are aged for seven long years. The wrapper and remaining fillers are from Jalapa, and all the tobacco contained herein was grown on Plasencia's own farms, operating for more than five generations. The body is medium-full and the flavors aren't shy, producing tons of earth, leather, and espresso with a spicy finish. Alma del Fuego is Spanish for Soul of Fire, a fitting name. From the sun and volcanoes to your palate, awaiting the flame of your lighter to burn it down to the nub. The story doesn't end there, Plasencia Alma del Fuego has been awarded by Cigar Aficionado with a 92-point rating, noting;

"Gleaming with oils, this box-pressed cigar is fashioned with a flat head and closed foot. Its open draw offers plenty of spicy, woody smoke that's accentuated by touches of coffee bean, dried fruit and cloves. The finish is nutty and sweet."

Points: 92 Wrapper: Nicaragua (Jalapa) Filler: Nicaragua (Ometepe)

Origin: Nicaragua

Binder: Nicaragua (Ometepe) MSRP: $17

Cutter: Guillotine | Vitola: Toro Box Pressed

Pre light cold draw: A nice cold draw filled with aromas of fresh herbs.

First Third: Starting with flavors and aromas of citrus lime and orange zest, followed by sweet spices and hints of maple sirup. The retro hale is fantastic, smooth, and gentle with nutty aromas like cashews, and sunflower seeds. The ash is firm and yellow grey.

Second Third: The blender made sure to have a smooth transition between the first and the second third, the experience is pleasant, and the second third starts with flavors in the realm of dark chocolate, toasty bread, dark coffee, with such a pleasant experience provided by seven years of extremely well cured tobacco.

Final Third: The final act has more to enjoy with notes and hints of fermented fruit liqueur, brown sugar, old cellar as well as leather and earthy notes, up to this point the draw, the retro hale and the ash are excellent, no regrets whatsoever.

Plascencia Alma del Fuego is likely to become one of your top 3 cigars ever! Congratulations to another great story of a family legacy.
